Christian Hillmann (IHES Bures sur Yvette et ULB Bruxelles) : D=11 supergravity and E(7(7))

Recently, the question if d=4 N=8 supergravity is finite as a quantum field theory has raised some interest in the rich symmmetry structure of this theory, in particular in its hidden E(7(7)) symmetry. It is well known that this theory results from a compactification of Cremmer & Julia & Scherk’s d=11 N=1 Supergravity to four dimensions, but the origin of hidden symmetry in d=4+7 dimensions is rather unclear. In my talk, I will focus on the other seven dimensions and prove that all fields can be combined in such a way that the E(7(7)) symmetry is manifest, if 49 additional dimensions are added to the system without changing the field content, which is possible by imposing a restriction on the underlying geometry.
