Dear colleagues: We want to thank you all for contributing to the working groups activities, participating in the Rome meeting, and for the excellent presentations and the very useful discussions. We achieved a lot for B-Pol. The letter of intent was submitted, and we continued to converge toward an agreed configuration of our payload. Here we would like to remind you of two important outcomes of the meeting: ------------------------------- 1) We confirmed that the basic configuration will be a SAMPAN-like instrument. We also decided that several changes will be considered before finalizing the proposal. These are listed below: Delta 1 : Consider a configuration without fast spin, but with the addition of an internal polarization modulator Delta 2: Consider an extension to lower frequencies: This has to be defined after 2.1) refined foreground analysis 2.2) prospects for forthcoming independent surveys 2.3) prospects for improved detection technology 2.4) analysis of delta cost Delta 3: Consider the addition of polarization pure horns and planar OMTs Delta 4: Consider the option of mirrors instead of lenses for the telescope Delta 5: Consider the presence of an on-board calibrator (either on a daughter satellite and/or an internal callamp) -------------------------- 2) We agreed on the following list of people in charge for writing the proposal (of course with help from all members of working groups). Here is a breakdown of the different chapters of the proposal: a) Executive Summary (Page limit = 2) and b) Introduction (Page limit = 1) STEERING COMMITTEE (DE BERNARDIS, BOUCHET, EFSTHATIOU, KREYSA, REBOLO) c) Scientific objectives (Page limit = 11) BUCHER, BURIGANA d) Mission profile proposed to achieve these objectives (Page limit = 2) PONTHIEU, PIACENTINI e) Proposed payload instrument complement required to achieve science objectives PICCIRILLO + MAFFEI, VILLA (optical system) PIAT, WITHINGTON (detection chain) DESERT, MASI (cryogenics) f) Basic spacecraft key factors (Page limit = 5) and h) Key technology areas (Page limit = 2) PIAT, PICCIRILLO, DE BERNARDIS, BERSANELLI g) Science Operations and Archiving (Page limit =2) STOMPOR, NATOLI, CHALLINOR i) Preliminary programmatics/Costs (Page limit = 2) STEERING COMMITTEE We will hold a first teleconference early next week among the colleagues listed above to organize the writing activities. These activities should produce a first proposal draft within five weeks. Best regards, Paolo de Bernardis Martin Bucher Carlo Burigana
