In particular, the 1930's were a fascinating time for nuclear physics. Following the discovery of the neutron by Chadwick in 1932, the artificial radioactivity was discovered by Irène and Frédéric Joliot-Curie in 1934. She decided to go to France and start working on nuclear physics. In 1939, she passed the examination for a French government fellowship. In 1940, she started working under the direction of Frédéric Joliot-Curie.
