Toshiko Yuasa was born in Tokyo in 1909. After studying at the Tokyo Normal School for Women (nowadays Ochanomizu University), she majored in physics at Tokyo Bunrika University. She was the first female physics student. he started working on spectroscopy. However, she was not very satisfied by the subject, as spectroscopy was becoming an applied science, while she was essentially interested in fundamental science.
